And then there was blue sky...

and there was a girl that walked around outside with a huge smile on her face looking up in awe at this blue sky. And she smiled as she squinted into the sun. A sun that she hadn't seen for 3 months (same with the blue sky). And she smiled at not having to wear a jacket or gloves or hat or scarf or 3 pairs of socks. She smiled at the melting snow. She smiled at being able to open her apt window to let fresh air in. And she smiled and smiled and smiled.

The Blue Sky

The end. :)

Hiburi Kamakura (Fire Festival) and Jyuhyo-o (Snow Monsters)

February 14 - Hiburi Kamakura

Hiburi - the brandishing of burning straw rice bags. Celebrants brandishing the burning straw rice bags grip the end of about a one-meter long rope attached to the bag. The rice bags are set on fire by the burning firewood in the kamakura (or in firepits). People pray for the sound health and well-being of their family while the bag is burning. Kamakura - a cylindrical hollow of about 1.5 meters high that is made of snow. In simple terms, a Japanese style igloo that you pray in (or set prayer candles in) instead of live in. Firewood (or a candle) is put inside the kamakura and burned. In farmer villages, many koshogatsu (new year's celebration) events were held up to 1930 or 1931. The brandishing of burning straw rice bags has continued, but only around the Kakunodate area.

grins...
Can you guess where this is going? hehehehe

Kamakura lining a Samurai driveway.

And this is me, brandishing my burning straw rice bag. grins My take on the praying for sound health etc. is that if you can successfully swing a burning straw rice bag around your head without catching yourself on fire, you ought to have good health for the next year... or at least maybe any sickness you might come down with won't seem so bad in comparison with catching on fire. But that's just me. grins

Here are the lovely ladies I went out with. :) Girls night out and what a night! (me, Mizuho and her 6 yr. old adorable daughter Ha-chan, Emi, and Brooke)

A fun night of good company and new friends (Brooke I've known since October), good food and amazake (a hot sweet rice drink), the new adrenaline-rush experience of swinging a burning object around my head - TWICE (the 2nd time at the advice of a new friend we met there - gaijin (foreigner). He said keeping the straw rope was a must, and I'm glad I did. My straw rope is hanging on my door now. grins), beautiful kamakura and winter fireworks, and soaked freezing feet. :)

Happy Valentine's Day to ME! hehehehe

grins Way better than candy. ;)

February 19 - Jyuhyo-o (pronounced with a short 'jyu' and a long 'hyO'... like "Ho there!") :)

This past weekend I went up to the Nordaas's (for those of you who don't know, Amy's wonderful parents) in Takanosu. I met the new English teacher, Erika, 19 and from Canada, and had a great time getting to know her. Sunday morning (their church is at 3pm) a group of 8 of us drove to Moriyoshi Yama (mountain), took a 15-20 min Gondola ride to the top, and walked around in the mist and fog (and sometimes snow) looking at, taking pictures of, and playing around and under and on the amazing Snow Monsters - jyuhyoo.

Driving to the mountain between walls of snow.

Gondola heading back down.

Approaching the top... enveloped in fog.

The group. :) Haiyamisu Sensei, Fumiko, Atsuko's husband who's name I can never remember, Atsuko, Erika, Bonita, and Arnie (and me).

Exploring. grins

The Snow Monsters.

The hole really was deeper than I was tall. haha

Peeping Atsuko. :)

Amazing, eh?!

How many favorite books can you have?

Now numbered among mine is Blue Like Jazz.

a chink off the iceberg...

"The thing I have to work on in myself is this issue of belief. Gandhi believed Jesus when He said to turn the other cheek. Gandhi brought down the British Empire, deeply injured the caste system, and changed the world. Mother Teresa believed Jesus when He said everybody was priceless, even the ugly ones, the smelly ones, and Mother Teresa changed the world by showing them that a human being can be selfless. Peter finally believed the gospel after he got yelled at by Paul. Peter and Paul changed the world by starting small churches in godless towns.

Eminem believes he is a better rapper than other rappers. Profound. Let's all follow Eminem.

Here is the trick, and here is my point. Satan, who I believe exists as much as I believe Jesus exists, wants us to believe meaningless things for meaningless reasons. Can you imagine if Christians actually believed God was trying to rescue us from the pit of our own self-addiction? Can you imagine? Can you imagine what Americans would do if they understood over half the world was living in poverty? Do you think they would change the way they live, the products they purchase, and the politicians they elect? If we believed the right things, the true things, there wouldn't be very many problems on earth.

But the trouble with deep belief is that it costs something. And there is something inside me, some selfish beast of a subtle thing that doesn't like the truth at all because it carries responsibility, and if I actually believe these things I have to do something about them.

......

... what I believe is not what I say I believe; what I believe is what I do."

convicting as hell. what am i doing with what i believe...? and if i'm NOT doing, do i really believe it... or am i just mindlessly following. not something i want to do, regardless of how "cool" something may be. so many times i want to be someone i'm not, something i'm not, somewhere i'm not, with someone i'm not... but what about using and working with and loving who and what's been given to me. and i think that's one of the hardest things in life... learning what to do with yourself when you see all these other amazing people out there doing amazing things, and you think... why can't i do that, be that, be there, think like that, write like that... whatever like whatever. but then i think to myself - Rachel, you're being dumb. don't you believe anything of what you've read and learned and studied and felt in the very depths of your being from God? you can't believe only pieces of God. don't you believe him when he says that he knit you together in your mother's womb? don't you believe that you are only one very small part of the very big body of Christ with Christ himself as your head... and that God made you the part he did for a reason? is a piece of clay, a vessel, in the position to ask the potter why he chose to make him/her the way he did? do you not believe Jesus Christ when he said that he loved you before the creation of the world...? He loved you before the creation of the world. Before the creation of the WORLD!
convicted? yes. working out my salvation day by day and in fear and trembing? yes. failing miserably? most definitely often. persevering? most definitely. loved regardless? beyond the shadow of a doubt. Christ's passion is my passion. The Christ who fed the hungry, healed the sick and lame and blind, cast out demons, overturned tables (of all sorts, not just the wooden ones), gave dignity to the shamed, lifted women up from their place with the dogs, had compassion on the dust of the earth, loved the ugly (not speaking of outward appearance), called the self-righteous religious authorities a brood of vipers, prayed for those who persecuted, mocked, humiliated, tortured and executed him, changed the face of the world... this is the Christ I am passionate about and with, this is the Christ I desire to serve, and serve by his grace alone. and Lord, God, help me.

Becca...

my heart is full of so much... so much everything... for you right now... so so much.

Ecclesiastes 3:4
... a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance...

4:10
... If one falls down, [her] friend[s] can help [her] up...

Proverbs 17:17
A friend loves at all times, and a [sister] is born for adversity.

16:4, 9
The Lord works out everything for his own ends... In [her] heart a [woman] plans [her] course, but the Lord determines [her] steps.

1 John 4:10-11, 16
This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.... God is love...

5:19-20
We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one. We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true - even in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.

Romans 15:13
May the God of hope fill you, [Becca], with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Love you with my whole heart, Becca...

THIS much and MORE! grins mpwah!

something beautiful and something fun

so the other night it was freezing...

and snowing...

niether one unusual.

And it was absolutely beautiful. So beautiful, in fact, that I went back into the cold after being inside my nice warm (sometimes not-so-warm) apartment. And I stayed in the cold for around 30 min. playing with my camera and all the fun things it was doing with snowflakes and darkness and flashes and fogginess and whatever else.
And eventually I became numb to the cold. :) And then I realized that not feeling my hands was probably a bad thing. ;)

so. The fruits of my numb fingers. grins

and now the something fun...

SKIING!! yes, I went skiing! The first time in 5 years, the 4th in my entire 23 years of living, and I had SO MUCH FUN. And I didn't die. grins And I actually only fell 3 times the entire day (the 4th didn't count because I was standing still and kind of fell over sideways). This is much improved from the last time I went skiing... the appropriate question for that fun day would have been: 'How many runs did you take and NOT fall?' And the answer would have been: 1. 10 hours of skiing, 1 run without falling... the last of the entire day. My knees and thighs and elbows turned colors they never had a right to be. But I must add that it wasn't entirely due to poor skiing skills. The skiis were too long and I was skiing on ice, so mix that with an inexperienced skiier and you're just asking her to fall down all the time. But not this time!! wahoo-ii! So, here be a little documentation of the day... from 6:45 am to on our way home.

(this is Christopher, the Bengtson's 11 yr old son... and these are our thoughts on being awake right now)

sugoi yuki da ne?! (crazy snow, eh?!)

grins

a slope that I didn't go down... if I had, I wouldn't be here writing this right now... I'd be in the hospital in a lot of pain.

winter wonderland

And right now I'm eating frozen blueberries with sugar and frozen milk (freezes when you pour it over the frozen blueberries)... mmmm yummy. grins
